Diabetic Foot Care & Education
Diabetes affects the feet and can have devastating consequences if left untreated. Diabetes is one of the leading reasons for lower limb amputations in Australia each year.
How Diabetes affects the feet:
- Diabetes reduce the circulation, especially the smaller blood vessels. This can reduce the body’s ability to heal wounds on the feet, causes dry skin, callous formation, and affects nail growth.
- Diabetes can cause nerve damage by reducing the sensation in the feet. This can increase the risk of falls and decrease the body’s ability to sense something is wrong with the feet, such as having a stone in your shoe or a cut on your foot.
- Tightening of ligaments and tendons can cause the feet to change shape, often causing the feet to develop a high arch. This puts a lot of pressure on the heel and ball of the foot which can cause wounds to develop.
- The team at All Ages Podiatry are well versed in treating and preventing foot conditions caused by diabetes.
